The urban landscape, the man-made environment that is constantly expanding and where the impacts of human activity are increasing, its human geography, the material and immaterial elements that compose it, the ways in which modern man experiences it and determines-co-shapes it, are at the center of the exhibition entitled “Urban Landscape. The space where modern man moves and acts - a constant challenge of man and nature” which will be hosted at the Aristotle Museum of Natural History of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, at Pier A’ in the port of Thessaloniki from September 9 to October 11, 2020.

The exhibition is a co-organization of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (EETE), MOMus and the Aristotle Museum of Natural History and is under the auspices of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The participations come after an open invitation by the Board of Directors of the EETE to its members of all specialties who live or work in Northern Greece, giving the opportunity to 90 contemporary visual artists to present their perspective and way of approaching and negotiating the urban landscape. The exhibition also hosts photographs by Anna Zervopoulou, with texts by Vasilis Melfos.

“As urban areas are striking examples of landscapes of the human environment, some indicative concerns that can arise from the exhibition are the urban landscape and its contribution to climate resilience and the importance of healthy urban planning in the well-being of urban space and in the improvement of psychology, environmental and social. Even the recent issue of the pandemic due to the coronavirus, which has suddenly and violently changed the relationship of people both with each other and with their living and working environment, can be a substantial issue of concern regarding the dystopian conditions we experience in urban space”, notes Maria Tsantsanoglou, Deputy General Director of MOMus, in her introductory text.

“Today, life in the urban space is plagued by a multitude of problems such as unemployment, the economic situation of workers, poverty, the devaluation of the arts and education, the commercialization of universal goods such as Education, Health, Welfare, Energy, Water, Culture, the impoverishment of immigrants and refugees, the rise of state repression, the commercialization - shrinkage of natural wealth and the disasters caused by military competitions and military interventions, all of this makes us worried as a collective space and makes us want to speak in the way we can: with our art,” the Board of Directors of the Chamber Of Fine Arts Of Greece states in its announcement regarding the exhibition.

As Spyros Pavlidis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aristotle Museum of Natural History, emphasizes, “the Aristotle Museum of Natural History of Thessaloniki today constitutes a bridge of the valid scientific knowledge of the AUTH with the wider public of our city, Macedonia and the country in general on the important issue of the Relationship between Man and Nature. The collaboration of the Aristotle Museum with MOMus and the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece with the exhibition on the Urban Landscape as a permanent challenge in the relationship between man and nature constitutes another essential step in this direction, especially in the sensitive area of the anthropogenic environment.”
